I drank a good amount of Barrier Brewing Company Icculus Kölsch this week. (See my tasting notes from 5/20/16 here.) We’re trying to kill the keg so we can get new stuff on draft at work.
While I was waiting for the bus to go hang out with two of my coworkers at a bar near work, I had a Schofferhofer Grapefruit, (tasting notes from 4/16/16). I actually had to run to catch the bus while drinking this beer, so I poured it in my aluminum water bottle and brought it with.
Hanging out with my coworkers was a super fun time. I very rarely go out because I’m pretty anti-social and just like to stay at home, but it was a nice night. The bar we went to seemed like it was filled with underage kids/really young looking/acting adults and served drinks befitting that sort of crowd. I think I had somewhere between three and four Coronas, but I can’t be too sure because my friends kept drinking my beer when I went to use the bathroom.
I also had a Captain Morgan and Cranberry, which my friends also drank. It’s my favourite basic mixed drink. I wasn’t good with carbonated beverages at college parties and quickly found that mixing my liquor with juice didn’t make me feel queasy.
We also bought shots from the shot girl that was walking around. They pretty much tasted like orange juice, but we have no idea what they were.

Had another Barrier Brewing Company Icculus Kölsch after my shift.
Saturday, May 28
Since we’re still trying to kill the keg, I had two half-litres of Barrier Brewing Company Icculus Kölsch.
After work, Jason and two people we work with went to a tiki bar near the restaurant we work at. I really didn’t like the bar. We had to go through some pretty intense security to get in and it made me feel really uncomfortable. While there, I had two Captain Morgan and Cranberrys.

I worked a double and it was the first time that I’ve ever worked a bar shift where customers were super insistent on buying me a drink. One customer was so pushy about it, that I let him buy me a Jose Cuervo Tequila Tradicional Ale Cask Finish (aged in Flying Fish Pescado Rojo Grande Casks) on the rocks. We just got a bottle of this in at work and I was looking forward to trying it. I actually found this tequila to be quite a lot smoother than I expected it to be. I had a lovely flavour. I would like to purchase a bottle of this to have at home.

Happy Memorial Day! Jason and I had two friends over for lunch, drinks, and fun.
I started the day with a Founders Brewing Spectra Trifecta– a Kolsch-style ale brewed with chamomile, ginger and lemongrass. I bought a six pack of this last year and still have a couple of bottles sitting around the house.
Appearance: cloudy gold
Aroma: very floral, slightly spicy, slightly bready
Taste: lemongrass, chamomile, ginger, lemon, bready, light orange
Feel: light, crispy, easily drinkable
Overall: After having this beer for a while, I feel like the ginger flavour has mellowed out from when I had this fresh. The floral notes are really shining through. I adore this beer so much. My second favourite offering from Founders.
Next, I had a Spiked Seltzer Valencia Orange.
Appearance: clear, visible carbonation
Aroma: orange vodka
Taste: orange Runts, vodka, club soda
Feel: carbonated, easy to drink
Overall: This is my least favourite of the Spiked Seltzer flavours. All the flavours taste like candied vodka fruit, but this is the worst. It’s still a very drinkable product.
It was so hot in the house and I was continuously in the mood for something light. Jason had put a few bottles of McKenzie’s Black Cherry Cider in the fridge and they felt almost cold enough to drink, so I grabbed one.
Appearance: clear gold
Aroma: apple, sweet cherry
Taste: Cherry Capri-Sun with very, very light cough syrup type alcohol
Feel: light, smooth, lightly fizzy, thin
Overall: I love this cider. It really does taste just like Cherry Capri-Sun and you can down a bottle as quick as a pouch of Capri-Sun. We tend to keep this in the house.
Jason saw this Paulaner Weizen-Radler Non-alcoholic, when we were at the beer distributor. He really wanted to try it before he saw that it was NA, but our friend who works at the store convinced him to get it.
Appearance: drank from the bottle
Aroma: sweet/tart lemon
Taste: very sweet, reminds me of British style lemonade, lemon curd
Feel: quite carbonated
Overall: This was okay. There are better tasting radlers out there.
We started playing King’s Cup, so I needed some very easy drinking beverages. I oped to begin the game with Lionshead Deluxe Pilsner Beer, which I drank two of while we were playing.
Appearance: drank from the can, but golden in colour
Aroma: light, grainy, slightly sweet
Taste: follows aroma, tiniest hint of floral hops
Feel: light, crisp, refreshing
Overall: This is a pretty simple, solid beer. Great for drinking games.
Jason had seen Boston Beer Co. (Sam Adams) Truly Spiked and Sparkling at the supermarket a few weeks ago and had been really excited to try it. When we went to the beer distributor earlier in the day, he picked up three flavours: Pomegranate, Colima Lime, and Grapefruit and Pomelo. They are so much better than the Spiked Seltzers in my opinion. Truly Spiked and Sparkling doesn’t have the weird taste at the end, like the Spiked Seltzers so. Truly also has a better fruit flavour than the Spiked. The lime was my favourite.
While drinking the seltzers, our friend Erin opened a Ninkasi Brewing Co. Oatis Oatmeal Stout that has been in my fridge for months. Of course, I had to taste it.
Appearance: drank from the bottle, but I assume a dark brown
Aroma: oats, molasses, resin?, chocolate
Taste: similar to aroma, very light fruit, mildly boozy
Feel: oily, smooth, light carbonation
Overall: Not a bad beer, but not something I’d likely drink again.
Tuesday, May 31
After a lovely date night getting pizza at one of the “best” pizzerias on Staten Island and seeing The Nice Guys, (which Jason LOVED), we relaxed at home and had some beer while catching up on a few episodes of Daredevil.
In keeping with our goal of drinking all of the hard sodas we can find/Jason is interested in, he purchased a Seagram’s Beverage Co. Orange Cream Hard Soda from the beer distributor the other day and decided to try it. He hated it, so I got to keep it for myself.
Appearance: drank from the bottle
Aroma: alcohol-y orange, creamsicle
Taste: alcoholic creamsicle with the gross fake sugar aftertaste that Not Your Father’s Root Beer has
Feel: like soda
Overall: I was not a fan of this. It wasn’t the worst thing ever, but it wasn’t anything special.
Jason tried a Boulevard Ginger-Lemon Radler and hated it as well, but at least attempted to drink it.
Appearance: drank from the can, but I’m going to assume it’s light
Aroma: ginger, lemon, citrus, wheat, cracker, spicy, floral
Taste: very ginger, sweet, tart lemon, lime?, light spice and floral
Feel: light body, high carbonation
Overall: I probably wouldn’t have this again. The ginger was super overpowering.

Until next time!
